at
St. Mary's Church
521 West 126th Street
The successful FAMOSOS DESCONOCIDOS Concert Series that began in the
Spring of 2007 will start again September 28 at St. Mary's Church with
the concert of Mandara. Mandara is the musical collaboration of Barry
Olsen and Valerie Dee Naranjo. Barry (trombone, piano, percussion) and
Valerie (marimba, gyli, vibes, voice, percussion) will be joined by
Bryan Carrott (David "Fathead Newman, Henry Threadgil); Nigerian New
Yorker Essiet Okon Essiet (Abdullah Ibrahim, Art Blakey); Benny
Koonyevsky (Israel Philharmonic, Donald Fagan); and "The Alaska
Percussion Quartet" from Fairbanks.
Having played with renowned
musicians such as Philip Glass, Paul Simon and Eddie Palmieri, and
usually seen and heard on the Saturday Night Live band and in the pit
of Broadway's The Lion King, Olsen and Naranjo will make this rare
appearance to revisit their musical journeys to Ghana, Madagascar and
South Africa. Valerie Naranjo (voted Best World Percussionist by DRUM
Magazine) brings the intricate rhythms of Africa to St. Mary's Church
in a performance that will make your heart race and your blood boil -
and may well blow out every window from Times Square to the George
Washington Bridge!
