Gmeng Se Na E
(Meh Seh Nah Eee)

“What Shall We Do”

Baere Yotere/ arr. Valerie Naranjo/ orch. Andrew Beall
for solo gyil in G major pentatonic and chamber orchestra

Written by Ba-ere Yotere after a mishap that he experienced. It is a good example of Ghanaian philosophy, that abhors complaint, because complaint, or any idle retelling of a story of mishap magnifies negativity.  When something unfortunate occurs, this creates an opportunity for the creation of positive energy – and what better than a vibrant song? “There are plenty of good friends around.”

The witty melodies of this contemporary West African piece harken to the Bebop of centuries later. The orchestration “plays itself” with challenging and extensive percussion parts.
Gmeng Se Na Eee is brisk, dense, difficult, and lively.
